Cranberry Relish, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Dear Reader: Posts for the next couple of days will be seasonally appropriate favorites….

The recipe is simple enough.cranberries

1 lb. whole cranberries

4 red apples

1 whole orange

1 package lemon Jell-o

2 cups sugar

Dissolve Jell-o in one cup boiling water. Grind all fruit
and combine with sugar into Jell-o at least one day before enjoying.

Back when Grandpa Fred and Grandma Myrtle made it every year,
they put the fruit through one of those old-fashioned crank meat grinders that clamped onto a table. It
was the olden days after all.

After Grandma Myrtle, who was born in 1900, got sick I took over Cranberry Relish duties.
It was the least I could do.

And instantly I started making changes. No meat grinder in my
kitchen, but I do have a Cuisinart. I love tangerines. What about substituting
two tangerines for the one orange? Yum. And I decided two cups of sugar is too
much. It’s easier to get the zip of the cranberry and the tangerines with just
a cup and a half of sugar. And Recently Ocean Spray has downsized bags of cranberries from 1 pound to 12 ounces, so that has also required adjustments. Three apples. Smaller tangerines. Just over a cup of sugar.

Thus endeth my changes to the Cranberry Relish.

No telling, though, what my daughter or granddaughter will
do to it.
