Your Civic Duty….and mine…

All week long I’ve been making phone calls, dealing with phone trees and punching in numbers.

First my JID NO:  120008011

Then my PIN no: 0500

It’s not the insurance company, though I’ve been dealing with them too. It’s the Superior Court of Los Angeles.

As a potential juror I’ve been on hold, checking in every day.

Been clearing the calendar, along with the garage, making sure I can show up if necessary at the Airport Courthouse.

I’d like to be on a jury. But of course the right kind of jury. One with responsible fellow jurors, an interesting case, where my service would matter, but not one that lasts too long or is too traumatic for anyone.

But of course that’s not how it works. You don’t get to pick or order up a case out of a catalog. A relative once served on a child custody case and they–I kid you not—passed around diapers among the jury.

Then again, that was Texas where just yesterday a Brittni Colleps, a 27 year-old Fort Worth high-school teacher was on trial for having with five of her students.

AT ONCE. Does that constitute an orgy?

And there was video. Which the jury had to watch…Creep city.

But I called in every day, like the good girl I (mostly) am.

My civic duty has now ended.

If only other responsibilities could be fulfilled by punching numbers into a phone system.
