Folks are going back to School! Already….my sister Alicia started teaching already.
Time to catch last of summer movies. Total Recall? Haven’t seen that one yet, but you should run to see The Intouchables. And although it might be considered an ‘art house’ movie The Intouchables is showing at most big screens. When it opened in France last year it became, in just two months, the second most popular movie ever in France.
Philippe is a wealthy French aristocrat, living in a Paris mansion, quadripelegic from a paragliding accident. He, of course, requires a full compliment of caregivers. Driss is from the projects, recently spent six months in jail and is looking not for a job…not at all, please no!….but for the signed paper showing he’s looked for a job and so can receive welfare benefits.
You are ahead of me…
Yes, Philippe hires Driss, largely against his will. And while it sounds like a clichéd set-up…..a young no-account and wealthy invalid learn about life from each other…The Intouchables in redeemed from the realm of cliché, by the fabulous portrait of Driss, played by Omar Sy, in his first lead role, by fabulous writing, beautiful photography, by unsurprising humor…and by the fact that it is a true story.
I hope the rumor that there’s going to be an American remake is false, because this is just so good and subtitles are really not scary. (WHY did we have to remake, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?…the Swedish original was stunning.)
And if you see Intouchables this week, you can get a free copy of the book that inspired the movie.
Five bikinis.
