“If you think I’m good,” said Ariel. “You should play Cullen.”
Wow. This was getting me frustrated. I can’t beat Ariel at Scramble. Six games at once going with Mama. I’ve been playing Trissie, who is excellent, right out of the gate.
And now Cullen?
My nephew Cullen is not the first one at the game table, especially for word games, so that had me surprised. But of course I have to send him a challenge. And I even knew what his user name would be Cu11en. His football number is 11 and he likes to replace the middle letters in his name with numerals.
So, now I am losing, with regularity, to Ariel and Trissie and Cullen.
Geez.
Scramble is like Big Boggle. There is an array of letters and you swipe your fingers over the letters to make words.
You’ve got two minutes, or 120 seconds. Ready. GO.
Longer the word, the more points. Plus letters have point values, less common letters get higher points. A game is comprised of three hands. Second hands have some letters doubled. Third hands have some tripled. Once in a while I win a hand, but not a whole game.
I practice my Lamaze breathing. I work to get into the Flow zone. I work on my technique, look for all variations of words, begin with plurals and move downward. Doing the same patterns consistently helps you remember what you’ve played. I look for high
value letter combinations. Interesting words.
And try not to think about how this attention to detail might help me in other aspects of life.
And then, finally it happens. I beat Ariel. Not by much, but I’ll take what I can get.
