Monday Scrabble…Jill-less….

Was hoping someone else jump, but since no one else volunteered, there I was:

“Scrabble at my house, be there or be square.” I did my best to uphold tradition.

“I’ll say we’ll start at two, but really we’ll start about two-thirty. I’ll have M& Ms and trail mix. Water and Diet Coke. Don’t ring the bell, just come on in. Color for the day, Turquoise, since it looks wonderful everyone.”

But of course it’s not the same….On the good side, I have parking for all! At Jill’s, parking was a precious commodity, secured only by winning at Scrabble.

And no Jill.

She’s been gone since March 13. Hard to believe that I can’t pop over and read to her, or keep her company, or have a chat ….me doing the chatting of course.

Here we are all chatting, hugging. Food…why do people want to bring food when we feel special about each other?

Kate brings oranges, Patrice chocolate, Anne apples, and Bobbie muffins. It’s the first time that we’ve seen each other in our new phase. “I actually drove over to Jill’s house first,” said Amy when we walked in.

We’ve been going to Jill’s house every Monday for over two years now and that’s  a hard habit to break. We crave each other….and except for the excused absences, Joy is off somewhere at a conference, and Sarah at an audition, we are 100%.

The latecomers are still the latecomers. Melinda, I’m talking about YOU!

I tried to get Rocky to at least make a brief celebrity appearance, and we did have a good chat, but he’s out of town. “I’m adjusting to my new reality,” he said. “No one will let me have dinner alone.” He spent a week with his son and the new grandbaby, did a fishing trip. Nancy has the best Rocky report, “He said, ‘Next week I think I’ll be ready to eat dinner alone.’” It made us both laugh and sad, at the same time.

Should we play multiple boards, or one board with teams? It’s one board and teams. The better to interact. It’s all about the interaction, the group hug…

And some things never change.

Who let Bobbie, Kate, and Patrice play on the same team? Of course they wiped the floor with the rest of us.
